CARERS STORIES - CASE STUDIES
The names have been changed to maintain confidentiality
Alan is caring for his wife Janet; who has had mental health problems for many years. Alan and Janet use the centre three times a week. Usually Alan enjoys the weekly social event , while Janet enjoys a drink and a friendly chat with the Oasis worker. Sometimes, Alan will leave Janet at the centre while he does a little shopping in the town centre. Other times, the couple sit and chat with other people in a similar position and enjoy the company.
Janet is receiving the time and attention she requires in a safe, friendly environment and Alan is able to have a little ‘me - time' without any interruption or disturbance.
Occasionally, Janet likes the inclusion of the social group, and with the support of the Oasis worker, she joins in with group events. This has enhanced Janet's confidence within the centre, and has had a noticeable positive effect on Alan, who appears so much happier.
Alan - "We used to argue a lot and I didn't have a lot of time to myself, now I can do what I need to. It's useful when I want to go shopping as well because my wife can stay at Oasis and talk to the workers and do the things she enjoys. Very good support all round." .
Janet - "I don't have anyone I can talk to at home apart from Alan, so I like to come and have talk and a cuppa with the Oasis worker, I feel so much better when I go home"
Michelle, Oasis Worker - "When Alan and Janet first came in to the centre they were really unsure about what we could offer them. They were both frightened, and said that they felt lonely and ignored by everyone. Gradually, they settled in, saying that the friendly atmosphere ‘hits you as you come in the door'. Both Alan and Janet are so much more relaxed. They smile and laugh, and make us all in the team here feel that our work is so worthwhile and positive. They are not the only ones either, we help a lot of people to have real quality of life. It is wonderful.
